Pick Your Violet

Are you old enough do you remember can you recall
The days when we played with a proper ball
On wet days it weighed over an imperial ton
When the laces hit you your cries would fall upon
Deaf ears of opponents and team-mates alike
The only cursing you would hear was ”On your bike”
When Man United had good old Dennis Violet
Whilst at Donny Rovers they played in African Violet
Those are the days to return to for watching a fair game
Where both teams were equal and tried exactly the same
Players like keepers today stayed on when they were hurt
Before and after the attitudes from each team were curt
Friendship and respect were the order of the day
Even if you were the hardest tackler ever to play
You were respectful to the better players on show
And though you’d kicked lumps out of them they’d know
You being respectful was meant  from the heart
Not like today when you want to tear players apart
This respect thing has today got no place in the game
Which is a total absolute unforgiving disgraceful shame
